English Phonetic Transcription
Phonetic transcription is the visual representation of speech sounds (or phones) using symbols, also known as phonetic script or phonetic notation. The most common type of phonetic transcription uses a phonetic alphabet, such as IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet). This tool is based on IPA.
There are two types broad transcription and narrow transcription. Broad transcription indicates only the most noticeable phonetic features of an utterance, whereas narrow transcription encodes more information about the phonetic characteristics of the allophones in the utterance. Broad transcription is simpler than narrow transcription. This tool uses Broad transcription. Broad transcription is suitable for English learners.
This tool supports the two most common English dialects:

- American English pronunciation dictionary (AmE pronunciation dictionary) is built from miscellaneous sources (CMU pronunciation dictionary, wiktionary, etc.). It contains pronunciation and parts of speech.
